Teach Your Heresies 11 - Command Centre

Establish Your Command Centre

Most people with a message to share blow it into the ephemeral winds of social media ... here today, gone tomorrow.

Have you ever tried to search your timeline to find that brilliantly written post you wrote where your advice was just genius? Yeah? Well good luck with that, eh?

That's part of the problem with many good people I see online. Their short-lived profundities that have limited impact

So seriously consider that if you have something permanently meaningful to communicate ... you will need a home base for your mission, a command centre, a communication centre. Your social media account just will not cut it.

If you're unfamiliar with making a site, begin to play around with blogspot to get the feel of it. It's free and it's what I use for my site. Access it via your gmail account.

I'm not here to teach the step-by-step process ... you'll find many useful videos on making a website with blogspot on YouTube.

Don't rush but begin your confidence building.

You can live without it for a while. But when you choose, expect to have a permanent longterm relationship with it.

Hint … make it name-based. EG … LadyOdin.com.

That way, it can cope with all your inner plot twists and turns.

Over the decades since the internet emerged, I've gone through dozens and dozens and dozens of domain names that I acquired and then dropped. If you listen to the gurus, it is like a pyramid scheme, where the only ones who make money are the ones who sell services to wannabe online entrepreneurs. After all this time, I've finally learned what's essential and what's a vanity or status purchase.

Particularly, while you're in the learning phase, you will be vulnerable to all kinds of ploys about what you 'have to have'.

Ballpark figure … $30 / year for .com’s. I pay $AU20 annually for LadyOdin.com through google.

Aim for a .com even if you live outside the US, unless your audience is intentionally regional.

To find out if a domain name is in use, search for it in in the address bar of your browser.

Most commercial hosting costs about $250 a year, plus your domain name on top of that. But I'll give you an important heads-up. Your website will have a much longer longevity if you haven't got to keep finding the annual hosting fee, especially when you are in the early stages of your life purpose journey.

I’m not teaching how to make money from your site … I’m teaching how to create a vehicle for delivering your purpose into the world. So I want you to set up so that costs are not a consideration, or at least a minimal one.

There are free sites that are ‘rehearsals’ for paid upgrades which you’ll need if you want to have your own clean domain name.

I've used wordpress and wix hosting platforms. Both come with such free versions.

But, in the end, for my purposes, the upgraded versions supplied many unnecessary features and the free versions made for super-awkward addresses for my website.

I've used Blogger  (aka Blogspot) for a while now, which is why I recommend it with confidence.

Keep it simple at this beginning stage while you build your content, your message, you’re teachings. Focus on finding and delivering your voice, your value, your rhythm. You do not need a lot of bells and whistles at this stage. Later, if you are really successful, you can migrate your content onto a slicker platform.

But ask yourself if a slick platform might not actually get in the way of communicating your message by being incongruent.

Authenticity is miles more important than polish.

If you don't agree with me, that's totally fine.
I want you to use my writing as a SPRINGBOARD to recognising and owning your own knowing, which is often buried within us, often rising in reaction.

many of my writings come about as replies to what I read ...
either as agreement or retort or response or just to clarify for what's started swirling around in my head.
Keep a record of these responses.

While I don't open up comments on my posts, I am open to hearing your thoughts.
